OH and I are currently waiting for the final bill from the energy
supplier that we've been with for many years, a member of the Big Six. We've been very disciplined and
have not had to keep the heating going 24/7 yet this winter, only a few
hours in the morning and in the early evening. On its own it's just about enough for the rest of the house but not for the living room, which is a bracing 17 degrees Celsius when the woodburner isn't on.
The living room has been cosy
every night because we've burnt the cherry tree we cut last year (Her Randomness has struck again), several small sycamores (Heaven in a Woodpile), two whole sheds (It's getting colder), an old oak sofa
frame, a boundary fence (More Wood), several discarded hardwood doorframes, floorboards and
assorted carpentry timber offcuts our neighbour leaves in our drive. And
the rest of last year's log order. I've been cutting wood to stove
size every weekend now and we're finally down to our last two weeks'
worth. The two big woodstores are almost empty apart from some unwieldy chunks of sycamore that need a bit more oomph than my handheld D-saw can muster. But the garden looks a lot tidier now that we've burnt most of the
crap wood that's been lying around. We've not had to buy any extra wood in yet and I think our heating bill this winter is going to
look a lot friendlier than it has for years. In any case, the deal we've
struck with our new energy supplier (one of the smaller ones, very kumbaya) is another one in the eye of cartel capitalism.
