We'd run down our wood store and for the first time this winter season had to watch Salamander in a cold (18 degrees C) living room wrapped in blankets and home-made woollen jumpers. Salamander is a Belgian political thriller about an incorruptible police officer who is having to go on the run and uncover a conspiracy. It's in Flemish, which as a German I can understand quite well, and it's compulsive Saturday night viewing now that Broen/Bron Series 2 has finished. It's got its fair share of car explosions but these don't really keep you warm so I contacted the wood deliverers from the previous season to track down that £60 seasoned hardwood per cubic metre deal. But they had finished doing wood deliveries for the season. Or maybe they didn't want to do that price any more. Or they didn't do Sundays.
OH scooted around the web a bit more and found someone very local with a smart sideline in wood recycling who offered £40 a cubic metre of soft wood including delivery and so we went for this. He turned up the same day with a big trailer and two little munchkins, his sons, and they even offered to cart it all back and forth along our cat shit-strewn garden path to our wood store. Job done! We should have enough for the rest of the winter/early spring now.
The coppicing has been cancelled this year -- I had had high hopes that after the tree disease we'd be able to get back in the wood but having rung and emailed various contacts, we never heard anything back and now it's getting too late in the year for it. Must push again in the autumn.
