During
January and February, we don't do much as the winter is just so cold
and snowy. As the days finally lengthen and get warmer, we hit our
local garden centre. The old allotment has a strawberry bed but we
don't know how long these have been in for and some of the crowns
look a bit peaky. We're told that the predecessor had manured it only
the year before but the area looks left to itself. It's also very
dry. We buy a whole range of strawberry plants (Elvira, Symphony,
Hapil, Honeoye), some gooseberry bushes, blackcurrants, redcurrants,
whitecurrants (forget their varieties).
One
sunny Saturday, the couple diagonally across from us give us a
friendly nod. The woman, about my age I'd say, very kindly offers
leftover parsnip as a welcome gift and also offers an armful of
comfrey seedlings, which we gratefully plant out near where the
potatoes will go.
The
seedlings from our back patio sowing sessions are coming on really
well. I've given in and used my work surface in my studio as a
temporary greenhouse.
