What we staggered home from the plot with tonight

OH is currently in the kitchen, bagging up 2.2 kg of raspberries from the plot. He is going to make raspberry wine with it. We also picked up 3 or so of the white scallop squashes that look ever so pretty! We'll have those roasted sometime this weekend. I also harvested a carrier bag full of broccoli to avoid any more florets bursting into flower,

 
plus a crown of purple kale for kale crisps later on. And 2 small cauliflowers, would you believe it! This plot is full of lovely surprises. We've also got 2 head-sized zumpkins growing nicely, one on the plot and the other one in the garden. We've got another month until Halloween -- let's hope they go orange like last year's did so we can carve one of them up into our by now customary weirdo face.

Yesterday I was crying all the way through chopping up a kilo of very potent onions from our plot but I am nevertheless very satisfied with the outcome, an Alsatian onion, mushroom and bacon tray cake -- or quiche -- with a yeast-based dough. Even the in-laws would not have spurned that (although it would also have given them quite a bit of wind).

Earlier today OH went round our fishmonger's for fresh mussels, something we've both been looking forward to a lot as for us, mussels mark the beginning of autumn proper (along with mushrooms, which are less reliable, though just as dicey) but he was told that we had to wait until tomorrow when the catch was expected. Okay! He got us enough fish for a fish pie instead, which he'll be making in a few minutes, and my contribution to the evening will be bread and butter pudding.
