After a leisurely start into our Saturday, with home-made raspberry jam on home-baked scones and the inevitable Time Team on telly, we finally got ourselves ready and out of the door. OH kindly carried the empty waterbutt and I took the waterbutt stand. We only wanted to do a quick graze over the plot, harvest the kale for tonight's Gruenkohleintopf with chorizo and fill up the new waterbutt with water from the two current ones, which are overflowing.
And of course we did all of that -- and much more. Three hours later, much later than we anticipated, we staggered home with 3 fat parsnips, 1 huge red cabbage, a whole bag of kale, having pruned the raspberries, pulled out the old decaying broccoli stalks, rolled up the netting, started digging over the strawberry bed at the back, cleared the old annuals from the trellis and the flowerbed, cut the old santolina and the oregano, pruned the blackcurrants, discovered that last year's cuttings had taken, and and and...
We're both really keen on getting started again now -- but there's a limit. The soil is still very claggy and digging is hard. Interestingly, we've already got dandelion in flower -- in February! The rhubarb is very far on already and the parsley has happily self-seeded where it grew, in the sheltered herb corner by the trellis, and that's going to turn into a wonderful green carpet of curly parsley by early summer. Good thing -- as I'm fast using up our frozen parsley from last year. I said to OH that we really needed to try and stay on top of the weeds this year. Not sure how -- I don't like herbicide. Note to self: collect loads of cardboard boxes from Lidl to use as ground cover.
