Weather was quite unsettled during the morning so stayed in. But it got better during the afternoon so we headed out.
Today, I dug out the broom and moved it further back behind the apple tree. OH dug out the big clump of lovage, split it, and I moved it to the back near the temporary compost and twig heap, that the frogs and birds love so much.
The disappearance of the broom and the lovage has opened up the curved bed a lot and I've started moving some of the shrubs and potted perennials into it -- monardas, spireas, hollyhocks, verbascum, geum, ceanothus, buddleia, fuchsias, poppies. I'm still having to plant out: gaillardia, dianthus, more monardas, tons of lemon balm, catmint, Russian sage, purple sage, dianthus from the plot, some more mystery plants plus a self-seeded cotoneaster for the north-facing fence, two ancient and neglected hebes, one more buddleia, a big pot of red-orange crocosmia, lots more crocosmia bulbs and anemone bulbs.
Also planted into the triangular bed by the patio: all the gladioli "Purple Mate", two delphinia (Excalibur -- dark purple), a salvia. This will look great! The gladioli bulbs from Lidl are really good -- they were cheap as chips and so far all came up.
OH carried on weeding his side and kindly donated an old buddleia and spirea.
Yet to do next week/over the summer:
* lift fence panel at the back and plant surplus raspberry canes on the little neglected bit there.
* lay out the area where we're going to have a little bench, to look at the pond.
* lift some more soil and transfer it to the third "coffin" out the front, fill it, and plant it up with tomatoes and perhaps leftover pumpkins and squashes.
* even out the area that will become the second "Holzleg" -- an extension on the existing one
* build the damn thing and cover it with roof membrane
* move the old Victorian bathtub down the garden and tidy up the patio
* move some of the fence panels to the allotment, to make raised bed boundaries
* saw up the rest
* move the maple logs off the patio and onto the beds, for decoration
* order a truckful of bark as mulch for the beds
* order a truckful of wood for the winter and stack in new wood store
* go to chainsaw dealer in town and ask for a demo
* keep on top of the weeds!
