The family have left for
further travel and we wave them goodbye.
Four big but by now a little elderly
beetroot became beetroot and orange soup, with lots of ground caraway
seed and dried dill for better digestion. 5 pounds of yellow
courgettes, some potatoes and 2 of our Welsh onions became a veg
soup, which we'll have later tonight.
Then onto the figs
ripening on our patio. We harvest 2.5kg, and there are still more! I
spend the rest of the afternoon in the steaming kitchen, jamming and
baking. 5 jam jars full plus a fig and almond custard pie (using lime
instead of lemon juice).
Love the jam, but the pie is a bit of a
gloopy, gummy disaster, primarily because I used commercial custard powder instead of making my own. Learnt my lesson!
OH loves the figs. He stuffs a jar full of figs and tops it up with a rum and sugar mix. "Figgy Rum" will be ready by Christmas, we hope.
