Apple festival

The munchkins helped produce 19 litres of beautiful apple juice today, now bottled and pasteurised. OH is happy because there was enough left for a demijohn full of cider.

Both munchkins were very impressed with our collaboration. We'd set up the gear in the "poolhouse" down the bottom of the garden, just like last year. We built a little production line, with one munchkin plus Random as chopper-overseer cutting and inspecting the apples and the other munchkin feeding the cut apples through the automatic garden shredder and making sure the pomace went into the old pillowcase. OH manned the DIY apple press and kept adjusting the bottle jack. The munchkins were fascinated.

When we'd pressed enough juice, I took myself off to the kitchen with one of the munchkins and designated him the lead taster. We filled the swingtop bottles and let them slowly heat up in a waterbath. Munchkin could not get enough of the bottle thermometer and kept dipping it in to check the temperature.

The ultimate mark of quality was the fact that both munchkins demanded and drank a whole bottle each for their breakfast and insisted on taking one home in their suitcases.
