Our pear tree is really suffering this year, and I think it's fireblight. It's got all the signs -- scorched-looking leaves, dark blotches everywhere, crumpled and small fruit, very low yield. What's worse, it looks as though our new Doyenne de Comice managed to get a dose of it as well -- it's already losing splotchy-looking leaves. Will try to treat it using a water-vinegar spray mixture but am not getting my hopes up here. It's not been a great year overall harvest-wise with regard to fruit -- apart from apples. Our neighbour's tree is heaving and so is ours. We're looking at over 60 Egremont Russets if they all stay up. That's a lot of lovely marzipanny apple cakes.
Read elsewhere that most everyone on allotments up and down the country is reporting massive harvest losses on their new potatoes where plants just yellow and then die. Can confirm although the main crop potatoes are still looking reasonably healthy. OH is worrying about his onions -- they're huge and plump but, as he said, they'll be a beggar to dry out. "That's what we'll use your Holzleg for!" he told me yesterday. Will we? Hm.
