The weather held and we went to the allotment after all. Planted out the last of the pumpkins -- it doesn't really matter now that the general seasonal weather forecast has predicted hail and thunder for the Olympic Opening Ceremony and another month of unremitting rain. I read of mass extinctions of bees and butterflies in the country but can't see much evidence of that in our allotment, overgrown as it is with self-seeded borage and poppies. It's Bee Central.
Everything growing okay-ish, apart from the squashes and the second planting of sweetcorn -- they're sulking. The brassicas are doing alright, esp. the red cabbage and the broccoli but I can't yet see heads forming on the cauliflowers. Fingers crossed: I want to make pakoras with them!
This summer's pride and joy is my flower bed full of blue and lilac cornflowers and bright orange and yellow gerberas. Every time we visit, I cut a few for the house -- they look lovely and cheerful, especially on a rainy day. The sweetpea and nasturtium L-shaped lattice is also coming along very well -- they don't mind the wet at all.
Can also report that last year's (September) potatoes are still being used for cooking. There's obviously quite a bit more wastage and they're a bit rubbery by now but the point is that they've kept for almost a year -- still about 4 kilos left -- and have given us meal upon meal of lovely fritters with yoghurt, lemon and smoked salmon. True Recession Fritters. They'll still be good enough to eat long after the Coalition has split up.
