Our living room is now completely unusable: in one corner, there's still all the brick-laying stuff, and now, all other available surfaces have been taken up by vintage lab measuring equipment that we rescued from a soggy destiny in a landfill this weekend. Some brilliantly designed gems here, all rounded edges and either thickly bulging or spikily square glass faces, capturing the bipolar nature of the 60s as a decade. For example we now have a centisecond timer in classic 60s dial design and in gorgeous duck egg blue, or a joulemeter in late 60s mango orange with black trimmings. Those retro designs are now all coming back. There's an oscilloscope (that we haven't managed to get going yet) and many, many magical contraptions that are mounted on teak wood, feature a lot of cast iron, springs, toggle switches and copper discs and that all seem to run on giant magnets.
OH, a great fan of steampunk, is clearly only trying to hide his deep gratitude to me because it was me who had spotted the opportunity that gave him a rare steam engine, still in its original box, and in excellent condition.
We don't know what to do with it all yet but the best pieces will go on display around the house.
