Sweetcorn's gone in this evening. Runner beans gone in. Sweet peas gone in. Courgettes gone in. A handful of red cabbage seedlings -- in. The ailing beetroot seedlings: also in. Two of the Patty Pan pumpkins: in and thriving.
OH and I had one ripe strawberry each. Strawberries are probably not going to be brilliant this year for us: the birds have got the first crop. Which is unusual -- they usually don't have a go at them. I've planted some in window boxes and hanging baskets so perhaps we'll get more later in the year.
Plot newbie L has been in and out of our plot and when we bumped into him at the gate earlier, he asked if we would come over and admire his efforts. He has done very well for himself. It's the ex-overgrown plot I'd had an eye on last year. It's quite sheltered from the wind, which shows in the plants, which are well out of the block compared to ours. The massive, labyrinthine shed complex he's inherited from the previous plotholder has got huge amounts of junk in it but also sufficient room for a greenhousy-type arrangement for his tomatoes. The sheds are overhung by a massive apple tree that is already full of apples.
"You can have them when they're ready!" he declared happily. Nice one, mate! Thank you! Although it's probably not entirely for altruistic reasons: he and his mate, the one with the felled conifers, were given bottles of our homebrew, which apparently went down very well, so he may well be speculating.
Allergy seems to have gone away for now. Maybe it was the cider that saw to it. Cough getting less and less, which is nice too. Settling down now to watch Iron Maiden play 80,000 people at the Nuerburgring race track on German satellite telly. The drummer is celebrating his 62nd birthday tonight. Rock on.
