Bird scarers

OH has struck again: we've had bird bite on the freshly planted cauliflower, the one brassica bed we have not yet netted. Last year he made his pirate contraption, and he's made a similar thing again, plus the good old CD chain. And this year, he's added the nodding styrofoam guillotine, a rectangular piece of styrofoam from the old shed stuck onto flexible bamboo. When there's no wind, it looks like an unfinished road sign. As soon as there's a breeze, the thing begins to bop backwards and forwards unpredictably. It scared me. The allotment pigeons however are a hardened bunch, who have seen everything and who will probably treat the nodding styrofoam as a rota rock, and nothing short of a spray of bullets from a Gatling gun will keep them away.
